Last week I was interviewed by Lisa Duke for Get Social, Do Business where I talked about what social means to me, why I think the Domino and Lotus community is so social. To some extent the episode was prompted by my posts at Lotusphere earlier this year – “Why Get Social Do Business Makes Sense” and “Get Social. Do Business – More Case Studies Including The YellowVerse and XPages”
For me social is not a fad. I’ve seen real results over the last two years. It takes effort – I’ve put in quite a number of hours outside my day-job but also been well-supported by Intec as well. In my opinion the rewards outstrip the effort put in and have enabled both myself and my colleagues to offer clear benefits to customers and potential customers as a result. And being social can be a distraction, but as Lisa picked up on from one of my earlier posts, a blank piece of paper can be a distraction if the individual wants to be distracted. It takes a disciplined mind to keep the right balance, but that’s no different to the necessity to keep a balance in other areas of life. Being social also requires you, at times, to take a moment’s pause and consider considering what it is appropriate to say instead of what you want to say. But is it worth it? Yes.
As a sidenote to the podcast, it’s also generated some discussion on twitter about the origins of server names in organisations. I’m sure a psychologist would have a field-day!
And on the topic of being social, on Friday I will be a panelist on “XPages Q and A with the experts“. Although I’ll be answering questions on a variety of topics, my five-minute topic is XPages and Dojo Charting. It’s sure to be a good webinar and I’m looking forward to it.
