When a Dev Screws Up An Install, Don't Get Nasty, Get NICE

Yesterday I totally screwed up my Notes install. Bottom line, it thought it was a multi-user install and no matter what I did, I couldn’t install the full client. There was a very simple cause. The usual one. I didn’t RTFM! We’ve all done it. (Please, just agree to make me feel less stupid.)

I tried uninstalls, reinstalls, reinstalls of basic Notes, uninstalls of basic Notes, uninstalls of other things, editing the registry, manually removing files. Yep, I got desperate.

Eventually I resorted to asking my friendly neighbourhood admin who, after a few suggestions, pointed me to the Notes Installation Cleanup Executable or NICE. This did the proper cleanup that my screwing around with files and registry settings had not. After uninstalling anything related to Lotus Notes and running NICE, I was extremely relieved to find I was able to install Notes correctly.

I’ve lost some stuff, but fortunately my Domino Designer preferences were backed up, something I would strongly recommend any developer do.

Now it’s time for me to keep my head down and remember to RTFM from now on…well, until the next time.
