XPages Build Project Investigations Improvement

Home » XPages Build Project Investigations Improvement

Some time ago I wrote about how you have to build twice if you have Build Automatically switched off, then open an application in Designer and make a change – the first build was incremental.

Just to revisit, I would always recommend having Build Automatically switched off unless you’re in an instance of Designer that can only ever have access to a local Domino server or local applications. Building a database remotely is not quick. Building a database has been known to break it if the person building it doesn’t have access to run XPages on the server. Building a database trashes scoped variables, so if someone else is developing or testing the app, they might get unexpected behaviour. So the first thing I do with any instance of Domino Designer is switch Build Automatically off.

I also have the build process running in the foreground.

So my usual procedure is open a database in Designer, make a change, build, then build again. But I noticed recently that the second build was either extremely quick or did nothing. So I checked, and the requirement for a second build is not there on 9.0.1. You only ever need to build once.

It’s just a minor improvement and probably one that my muscle memory will fight against for a while. But it’s certainly very welcome. Thank you IBM!
